An exhausted man stagers out of the jungle towards
the house where adventurer Allan Quatermain and his fiancée Jesse,
are preparing to leave Africa for their wedding in America.

The man was part of an expedition, which included Quatermain's brother, Robeson, that went searching for a mystical city of gold.
He brought back several artifacts, including a gold coin, that testify to the existence of an unknown civilization.
Before the man can say more,
he is murdered by two mysterious assassins.

Quatermain cancels the wedding to find his brother.
Jesse, none too pleased at the postponement, decides to join him,
figuring she would rather be by his side in the wilderness
than alone in America.
