Maria Crittenden meets Jessie and explains
that
Frémont's mission has been recalled
as a result of the
incident with Colonel Kearny and Frémont's
demand to
take a cannon along on the expedition.
Maria informs Jessie that a messenger has been
sent to
Missouri by packet boat to tell Frémont
of his recall. Jessie immediately send her own messenger by horseback to
inform Charles what is happening so that he can begin his
expedition before the government messenger
arrives
with the recall order.
When the messenger sent by Jessie arrives,
Frémont and his
men immediately set out their expedition.
